The Meteor Showers
Every year, 2 meteor showers – the famous Perseids and the lesser known Delta Aquariids – converge in late summer. Both have already begun to shower earth w/ their falling light. The Delta Aquariids peak in late July. This week the moon sets between midnight and dawn, leaving some moon-free hours before dawn for watching both the Delta Aquariids and the Perseids. The Delta Aquariid meteor showers peak before the Perseids, in late July.

The coming month will be the best of 2023 for watching meteors. There will be a very thin waning crescent moon during the Perseid’s peak around August 12 and 13. So, the moon will be up there, but not too bright. After the Perseids there will be several more good meteor showers before 2023 ends. Check out EarthSky’s meteor shower guide.

We can see the Delta Aquariid or Perseid meteors, any time from late July to mid-August (even though the full moon around August 1 will cast its light in the sky for much of the night).
It’s best to watch shortly before sunup & the mornings prior to the full moon (Tuesday, August 1, 11:32 am west coast time).
The 2023 Perseids should be a good display, with only a small waning crescent moon to interfere, around their peak on the mornings of August 12 and 13. After the Perseids … there will be several more good meteor showers before 2023 ends.
