NIGHT LIGHT NEWS
DAILY POSTINGS
Thursday, December 7, 2023- 8am
Festival of Hanukkah * begins tonight.
(learning & participating today in a world festival of Light).
Light over darkness, Good over evil.
The Jewish festival of the Miracle of Lights.
The Hanukkah Lights illuminate the outside present day Kali Yuga darkness. So the Way is not so dark for the seekers of Light.
The Light is for the Renewal of the World.
At the creation of the world by G-d, the words were heard….
“Let there be Light.”
And the Earth & all her kingdoms came to be.
We place our menorah (candles) in the windows.
So everyone can see the light – bringing light to the outside darkness. The light of hope, of peace, of beauty, the Light of Goodness & Goodwill.
The Light brings hope to those in exile.
The lighting of the candles (Advent & Menorah) reminds us of the effect of every human. Each act of each human is to be of Goodwill & each of us is to contribute a measure of light to illuminate the world – the “outside”—as indicated by the Chanukah Light which is to be placed at a window or “at the entrance of the home, outside.” For everyone to see.
With our Lights, we thus “bless the world.”
So many festivals of light in December.
As each day has less & less light.
Lighting our candles in the darkness.
Kindling our light in this darkness, offering hope to the people.
Today, Thursday, December 7, 2023.

The Jewish Festival of Hanukah begins.
We light the first candle on the menorah.
Hanukkah (Chanukah) is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah (candle) lighting, special prayers and fried foods.
The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication,” and is thus named because it celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple (as you’ll read below). Also spelled Hanukkah (or variations of that spelling), the Hebrew word Chanukah is actually pronounced with a guttural, “kh” sound, kha-nu-kah, not tcha-new-kah.
In the second century BCE, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who tried to force the people of Israel to accept Greek culture and beliefs instead of mitzvah (the Jewish religious commandments – as in the 10 Commandments) observance and belief in G‑d.
Against all odds, a small band of faithful but poorly armed Jews, led by Judah the Maccabee, defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of G‑d.
When they sought to light the Temple’s Menorah (the seven-branched candelabrum), they found only a single cruse (days worth) of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks. They lit the menorah anyway thinking they had only one day of Light. Miraculously, the one-day supply of oil lasted for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.
To commemorate and publicize these miracles, the sages instituted the festival of Chanukah.
After the candles are lit, there is singing of prayers.
Prayers
We kindle these lights [to commemorate] the saving acts, miracles and wonders which You O G-d have performed for our forefathers, in those days at this time, through Your holy priests. Throughout the eight days of Chanukah, these lights are sacred, and we are not permitted to make use of them, but only to look at them, in order to offer thanks and praise to Your great Name for Your miracles, for Your wonders and for Your salvations.
To Listen to the prayers.

A further message for our times now.
Chanukah comes as our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land battle for their lives and for the future of the free world. And Jews all over the world are feeling the dark cloud of hatred and antisemitism.
Oh, are we ready for Chanukah’s message of good over evil and light over darkness!
The Rebbe (rabbi) taught us the Chanukah flames remind us that, as in the past, G-d is at our side, protecting us, guiding us, and bringing spiritual light to the darkness that swirls outside.
And as we add another flame each night (taking care to light on Friday afternoon before the Shabbat candles, and on Saturday night after Shabbat is over), we stand in & are grateful for the additional gift of spiritual light that each one of us brings to each other & to the world.
With wishes for a Chanukah festival filled with spiritual light & love.
