Cancer Sun, Jupiter in Cancer, Mercury & Jupiter in Cancer (soon in Leo) – and outside our large window is a herd of deer, resting in the shade of the oak trees.

The Cancer Labor – the 4th Gate opened for Hercules –

Each Labor depicts a journey, of which there are 12 – the journeys of the Soul experiencing life through the personality encountering life on Earth in form & matter.
Experiencing tests, trials & learnings, these are what Hercules (humanity) encounters in the 12 labors.

They are stories, allegories concerning the soul’s evolution in form, using the personality as its vehicle, & and the development of discipleship through the 12 lights, signs, rays, planets of the zodiac. Each Labor contains a spiritual lesson & spiritual task.

The 4th Labor – under Cancer – the Capture of the Doe (Ceryneian Hind). Cancer – the masses of humanity, home, instinct, the moon, daily life of humanity living instinctually within form & matter which is imbued with intelligence.
Hercules (humanity) begins with instinct, then moves into intelligence, becoming a Thinking individual, then moves into the higher intuitive faculty of the mind (a quality of the Soul).

The doe is a symbol of intuition. The labor represents the disciple moving past mere intellectual knowledge and physical desires, learning instead to follow the quiet, guiding light of intuitive wisdom.

Tasked by King Eurystheus, Hercules had to capture the Ceryneian Hind, a magical, golden-horned, bronze-hoofed deer sacred to the goddess Artemis. Because the deer was beloved by the goddess, Hercules was forbidden to kill or injure the doe.
The Hunt: Hercules tracked the elusive creature for a full year across Greece, Thrace, and Istria.

The Capture: Because the animal was sacred, Hercules was forbidden to shed its blood or cause it any harm. Hercules finally caught the doe by shooting a gentle arrow between its bone and tendon, its foot (without drawing blood). Then Hercules, with compassion and care, clasped the doe to his heart & brought it to the Temple, to the holy shrine of Mykenae.
Hercules bore the doe, carrying it to the center of the holy place and there he laid it down before the Lord. And it seemed like the doe was dead. But the Lord said – “Because Hercules bore the doe within his arms, close to his heart, in this holy place the doe finds rest (is only resting), and (with love & compassion shown humanity) so does man.

Later, if one looked up on the far horizon where stood the temple of the Lord, the shrine of the Sun-God, with glistening battlements, one could also see on a nearby hill there stood a slender fawn.

And from the Council Chamber of the Lord, where sits the great Presiding One, there came a voice: “
Again and yet again must all the sons of men, who are the sons of God, seek for the golden antlered fawn and bear it to the holy place; again, again and yet again.”

The word “hind” comes from an old Gothic word, meaning “that which must be seized”, in other words, that which is elusive and difficult to secure.

A Lesson in Detachment: In the myth, both Artemis and Apollo attempt to claim the doe. Hercules is challenged to stand in the middle, recognize that the doe belongs to neither, and ultimately offer it to the “God of the shrine”. Bailey interprets this as the disciple learning to act selflessly without claiming personal ownership over the spiritual gifts or insights they receive.

Hercules held the doe close to his heart.
The image of Hercules holding a deer (the Ceryneian Hind) close to his heart represents his transition from a brute warrior to a compassionate hero. It symbolizes his obedience to divine laws, his restraint over his immense strength, and his profound reverence for nature and the gods.
