THE TORNADO.
And so a mile from our home a tornado or two happened late afternoon or early even 2 days ago. The weather was strange, the color of the sky & air a kind of yellow gray, the wind came up, the trees started to twist & turn & our electricity went off. where we live we don’t get texts or cell phone calls so we were on our own.
We went into an inner room as there had been an earlier phone call when the electricity was working of possible tornadoes in the area (unusual for this area). In the inner room a tiny hall with our cat in his carrie meowing, we listened to what was occurring outside. The sound was different, very loud, we heard the wind & rain.
Then after 20 minutes the sound lessened & we left the inner room. Looking outside all seemed oK but the color was still strange. And we had no electricity. We thought oh well it will be restored soon. But it wasn’t. We gathered our two lanterns (one solar, the other with batteries). They are adequate but actually not enough. Candles were too dangerous. So we went to bed.
The darkness was really dark. No electricity. A deep darkness. In the morning, no electricity. We live 12 miles out of town in the woods. So we decided to drive to town around noon. About a mile on the roads from our home the devastation began. Trees twisted, bit oaks torn from their roots, electric poles broken in half, live wires, fire trucks, a swath of about a mile of broken trees, broken electric poles, trees piled on top of each other, debris in the roads, crews everywhere, drivers told to be careful of live wires hanging down, on the roads, etc.
It was a tangle of devastation – devas-station, actually.
I wondered how the devas, the fairy builders felt about this?
We drove every so slowly thru the debris, stopping here & there being hailed by helpers telling us to be careful.
As I looked out the window I saw the flowers were still blooming, the honeysuckle still climbing the broken trees as if nothing had happened. But something had definitely happened & it was traumatic.
It’s the 2nd day now of no electricity.
The food in our refrigerator & freezer is spoiled.
Our entire house is electric. So no cooking, no phones, no computers, no light, etc. – we are told to be careful of the water, to drink bottled water. We can’t do anything at the house. We have to go to bed early, wake up at dawn for the light, driving into town if we want to eat. The tornado was headed towards our village/house but it stopped about a mile away.
The sun is out, the sky is blue, the birds are chirping, the honeysuckle is still on the downed trees.
We are alive & well. We are grateful. The clean up is ongoing.
We won’t have electricity for days. We realized we needed more emergency lanterns, & candles & matches where we can find them. We will have to figure out what to do with the spoiled food.
We will continue on as we can. Making decisions each moment as needed. More when I can write more. love, Risa
