Hi, Maria, I have thought about your question & pondered it deeply. It is a most important question & one that many parents ask, especially those seeking to build a spiritual foundation in their children.
First, parents must realize that the most important thing for a child is for their parents to develop their own interests & to love what they (the parents) do.
Children are like little chicks or ducklings. They look to their parents with complete adoration to teach them what they (the parents) know & love. Everything else the children need to learn they will learn from others.
But parents have gifts, talents abilities & interests.
We are to teach them from those places – our interests, talents, gifts & abilities.
Examples from my life – I love art & religion (Pisces Sun), beauty & harmony & reading (Libra rising), astrology, the stars & heavens & psychology (Aquarius moon). When my children were little I took my children to museums, the observatory to see the stars, to art & dance classes & told them about architects & writers that I loved & was reading. We read every night together in front of our fireplace. We walked everyday in the woods, we cooked together, we travelled to different cultures for their art & I spoke the language of religion, spirituality & astrology to them daily.
I gave to them all that I had, all that I knew & was interested in.
This is what we do as parents. The children learn from the heart of the parents that way. A most authentic learning.
Today my children are extraordinary expressive people.
Each one an artist (dance, painting, sculpture, clothing design, etc), each one musical, they travel, are collectors, prepare wonderful foods, they are inventive, imaginative, quirky, unusual & independent. Most of all in their heart they are artists.
I felt I wanted to say these things to you so that you (mother & father) develop & focus too on yourself & the self-ness of you is then given to your son, Joseph & then he learns all that you both as parents have to give him. Be confident in this self development & the sharing w/your child. Parents and children live parallel yet intersecting lives. Both are developing side by side.
About parents & children, I am always reminded of the mother duck who takes her little ducklings across a busy street in Memphis, Tennessee (1pm & 5pm each day. They walk together into the Peabody Hotel where they go to a fountain & splash around before retracting their steps together & go back out into the world & cross the street again. There is a red carpet now for their little pilgrimage.
You & Joseph’s father are that mother duck…the little one, Joseph, behind you, following & learning from you, trusting you, his entire world is the two of you.
Developing your skills & what you love, then is given to Joseph & he learns & then one day, he becomes independent & adds to what you both gave to him.
You two are Joseph’s first learning, first love, first community & first loving story.
Later Joseph, from all that you gave him, will create his own story. love, Risa

The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. still has its famous Peabody Ducks, who march daily from their rooftop “Duck Palace” to the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and return at 5 p.m., a beloved tradition involving five North American mallards led by the official Duckmaster.
